The IFTAS Moderator Advisory Council is the community body that reviews the Moderator Needs Assessment results, weighs in on projects and spending, and directly reviews activities to ensure they are fit for purpose, meeting the needs of the moderator community, and steering the work of IFTAS.

Because participation in such groups is often dominated by people with the privilege of being able to volunteer uncompensated time, IFTAS offers a stipend of $260 per month to help ensure a broad representation of voices. Part of our non-profit mission is to support the uncompensated labour provided by the hardworking moderator community, and this is a small first step in that direction.

Participation includes one video meeting per month, and we ask that you commit to two hours each week commenting on proposals, reviewing activities, or suggesting new services. To get a sense of what we’re working on, and the kinds of things we’d like your feedback on, take a look at our Activity Board.

While anyone with relevant experience can apply, priority is given to active moderators working in ActivityPub platforms.

Our current panel has been an invaluable resource for feedback on our planned activities, and as we begin working to respond to the most recent Needs Assessment, we’d like to add more members to the group to ensure we are receiving feedback from a diverse, representative group of active moderators.

If you’d like to apply, please fill out this form: Moderator Council Application

Applications will be reviewed by December 31, and announcements made in early January 2024.

If you’d like further details, or have questions, please email Jaz

@Chron That’s like fools gold … also, $2.5M? That’s enough for like, what, a hundred yards of track after lawsuits?

@VModifiedMind I just found it interesting and learned about it from the video. Some neat use cases, did some additional reading afterwards.

Today I’m walking off the job with hundreds of my Washington Post colleagues for 24 hours to demand a fair contract. It's the postguild's first strike in 48 years.

To support us, avoid all Washington Post journalism today, Dec. 7.

feels a bit wasteful for every Mastodon instance to keep a copy of the same file. some redundancy and decentralisation is good, but i wouldn't mind splitting the bill for storage with a few other instances.

how about an S3 proxy that deduplicates files to save space on copies? just store by hash instead of file path and have a key-value map so it looks like a file system to the Mastodon instance. one such map per instance connected to the shared storage pool.

you might even design it so it moves files away from shared storage and to instance-specific storage if only one instance needs that file, so you're only sharing the cost of shared files.

@jason I don’t often throw fits, but today was a good day for one. Note: unrelated to my day job, just a volunteer side gig :)

So herez my thing- if you're a company that produces a solution for securing things (like doors), your software shouldn't require a three year old unpatched version of chrome, unfettered internet access AND install a effing back door onto the server with password "recovery1234"...in fact, you shouldn't be in business.

@politico Most excellent. Hopefully Tubervile didn’t get a damn thing.

@TheAtlantic is the closest thing to a Big Journalism outlet that truly gets -- and wants to do something about -- the threat to our democracy. The publication is tiny by TV network and New York Times standards, but it punches well above its weight.

Its special issue on what Trump 2 would look like is the closest thing I've seen to an honest reckoning from a publication of its clout.

May this break through to the others...

The massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde was one of the deadliest school shootings in US history.

More than a year later, findings from a state-led investigation into the chaotic response have yet to be released. Most officers involved in the response have declined to talk publicly.

But ProPublica, Frontline
& Texas Tribune gained access to materials from this investigation, including interviews with officers, hours of body-cam footage & 911 calls.

The U.S. House has voted to expel New York Republican Rep. George Santos over ethics violations, making him only the sixth lawmaker ever to be kicked out of the chamber.

I just feel terrible for George Santos’ mother. Imagine dying three separate times, including on 9/11, and then your son gets expelled from Congress. That’s a string of bad luck.

@geerlingguy - what's the difference between Twingate and Tailscale and Teleport - they all feel very similar. Tailscale maybe more "in the weeds" with its JSON based access file. Maybe Twingate adds a bit more ease of use and is therefore a bit closer to Teleport?
