Discovering the #fediverse gives me the same feelings #linux did years ago. The endless choice, excitement of discovery, clash of philosophies and a community.

I spent years #distrohopping from #ubuntu , #arch , #voidlinux , #nixos etc and then back to arch. Also spent a long time switching desktop environments and window managers like i3.

I started on #lemmy and #mastodon . What do I try next? #selfhost an #activitypub server? Which one?

I'm very happy to run my #Hamburg -Blog "Der Flaneur" (https://derflaneur.de) with the fabulous #opensource blogging-software Ghost.

Now I'm reading that #GhostCMS might get #ActivityPub-Support this year. The consequence sounds great: "Suddenly, we could see a path to your personal website becoming the single source of your identity on the social web." (ghost.org)

Can't wait to connect my ghost-blog to the #fediverse! (Although I still have difficulties to imagine how exactly such a ghost-identity might look like. Will it be something like #WriteFreely?)

2024 war auch das Jahr, in dem ich wieder regelmässig gebloggt habe, nachdem ich 2023 hier im #Fediverse mit #WriteFreely zaghaft wieder angefangen hatte. Zwar hatte ich in den letzten Wochen vor Weihnachten viel zu tun, sodass es eine zweimonatige Pause gab. Aber ab nächster Woche bin ich wieder regelmässig dabei!

Eine fantasievolle Illustration der Zahl 2024, gestaltet aus Naturmaterialien in einer Waldlandschaft. So you only need one account in the #Fediverse and with that account you can connect to all server types. I understand this only partially.

I mean, my account is registered on a #Mastodon server. I can follow #Pixelfed, #PeerTube, #Sharkey and al other types of accounts and they will show up in my feed. That in itself is brilliant.

However, what if I want to write a blog on #WriteFreely? How do I use my Mastodon account for this?

I created a seperate account on write.as. Is this unnecessary?

Cela fait maintenant 6 mois environ que j'ai mon propre serveur. C'est une de mes meilleures décisions vis à vis de ma vie en ligne. Grâce à Yunohost, je peux m'auto-héberger des services où je conserve mes données. Les 3 outils principaux sont cette instance Gotosocial, un blog avec Writefreely et un wiki avec Wiki.js.
Je pense m'installer bientôt une alternative à Linktree via un site sous hugo (ou directement du html basique).

#WriteFreely v0.15.1 is out now! This is a relatively minor update that you can consider skipping, but it has some important small fixes.

❗One important note❗ The release binary won't work on servers older than e.g. Ubuntu 20.04. If running WF on an older system, you'll need to compile this update from scratch.

Our latest version of WriteFreely is out now! This is a minor update, but with some important bug fixes, especially around navigation and federation.

Note: The official release binary will not work on older systems, e.g. Ubuntu 18.04 or earlier. See #1064 for more information and a way to work around it.

Upgrading from v0.15.0

Download the latest release for your operating system and architecture
Stop running your writefreely server
Replace all files in your installation (except for the keys directory) with the ones in the archive
Start your writefreely server again

Before restarting writefreely, make sure your database is backed up, and then update it with:

writefreely db migrate

Follow the instructions in each previous release if you're upgrading from a much earlier version.

Nel 2024, per la prima volta, si ha finalmente la sensazione di avere una massa critica di persone e piattaforme interessate a ridare vita a Internet per riportare in vita ciò che abbiamo perso e creare qualcosa di nuovo. Solo nell'ultima settimana ci sono state conversazioni fra #Mastodon, #Flipboard, #TheVerge, #Buttondown, #WriteFreely e diversi co-autori della specifica #ActivityPub. C'è la sensazione palpabile che questo possa essere l'anno del web aperto!

At various points we revisited our old idea for networked publishing in Ghost and tested a few prototypes, but we were never sure how to make it scale; nor how many other platforms would ultimately adopt it. For all its promise, ActivityPub (like many open standards) seemed to generate products with user experiences that were often confusing and convoluted.

But something else happened in the intervening period between 2016 and 2024: People became increasingly fed up with the behavior of centralized platforms, and increasingly hungry for alternatives. The motivation for exploring and understanding new technologies, rough edges included, meaningfully increased.

In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new.

In the past week alone, we've had conversations with Mastodon, Flipboard, The Verge, Buttondown, WriteFreely, and several co-authors of the ActivityPub spec. There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of thetintx-desktop the open web.
