#Palestine / UN Report: 69% of Gaza Structures Damaged; Nearly All Schools Affected
A recent #UNOSAT assessment, based on December 1st, 2024 satellite imagery, reveals that 170,812 structures in the Gaza Strip—69% of the total—have been damaged or destroyed. This represents an increase from the 66% reported on September 6th, 2024.
The most significant increase in damage is in North #Gaza and #Rafah, with 3,138 and 3,054 newly damaged structures respectively. Within North Gaza, Jabalya saw the highest number of new damages (1,339). The same assessment indicates that nearly 88% of schools in Gaza (496 out of 564) have been directly hit or damaged, requiring extensive repairs or reconstruction. This includes 55% of government schools, one-third of UNRWA schools, and 12% of private schools.
The increase is largely attributed to a rise in directly hit schools, particularly in North Gaza, where 11 out of 18 schools were reclassified as directly hit in the last three months. Most directly hit schools are located in areas where the Israeli military issued evacuation orders.
Before the conflict, these damaged schools served 543,000 students (88% of Gaza's student population) and employed over 20,000 teachers (87% of the teaching staff). An additional 41 schools are considered at high risk of damage due to proximity to damaged sites.
