Someone sent me a podcast called Accessibility and Gen AI by @Ted_drake and, aside from doubting if they'll have disabled AI critics on the show, my main response to their latest episode is https://robertkingett.com/posts/6593/ #AI #Accessibility #Luddite

This from @Daojoan really lays out what I’ve been feeling lately.
“It's almost an act of heresy to express distaste about the world's digitization as if any rejection of technology is a selfish, privileged whine.”
Edit: Fixed correct Mastodon handle.

When you try out openstreetmaps or organicmaps, yes there's going to be some annoyances over functionality you were used to with google. But soon you'll zoom into a new city you are exploring and not have to immediately see where the home depot is and instead by able to get little basketball icons on every basketball court in the city and you'll understand that google never knew how to make that good of a product, they just learned how to be first across the finish line. #Luddite #Cyberpunk
#Luddism is gaining more and more traction and there are some very visible and famous voices such as @brianmerchant, @jathansadowski, @bigblackjacobin. But all are men. And as we know: "Nothing that only men like is cool."
So: Do you know any women or nonbinary people who call themselves #luddite? Who embrace that mode of thinking and working? Would love to see recommendations and see more non-male voices!
Hello #Mastodon! Moving to a new server, so here's my #introduction.
I'm a technologist, urban planner, and a #PhD student based in #Toronto, with #Luddite tendencies. I research municipal climate action plans and the role of computational modelling in shaping them. Particularly of the emancipatory potnetial of modelling.
I also think and write about #anticapitalist climate futures of #Palestine and the #Levant.
With @bothness, I co-founded Palestine Open Maps https://PalOpenMaps.org

Telling big techbros they shouldn't have built the Torment Nexus is as redundant as calling out any right-winger on their hypocrisy. Dystopia is the point:
"[Billionaires] sell us cynicism. They can't sell us hope, because realistically hope would look like the unraveling of everything they represent. There is no place for billionaires in a hopeful future."
Billionaires reinforce a dystopian reality instead of preventing it, because they picture themselves WINNING at it, and sell the idea that we can too, like heroes in our own video game.
"We SHOULD view the world as a dystopia-- and with the help of These Products, we can triumph over the rabble and wreckage that stands in our way."

Today in Labor History January 19, 1812: Luddites torched Oatlands Mill in Yorkshire, England. In order to avoid losing their jobs to machines, Luddites destroyed equipment in protest. Their movement was named for Ned Ludd, a fictional weaver who supposedly smashed knitting frames after being whipped by his boss. Luddite rebellions continued from 1811-1816, until the military quashed their uprising.
Chant no more your old rhymes about bold Robin Hood
His feats I but little admire
I will sing the Achievements of General Ludd
Now the Hero of Nottinghamshire.
The sentiment for this poem comes from the fact that Robin Hood was a paternalistic hero, a displaced aristocrat who stole from his class brethren and gave to the poor; whereas Ned Ludd represented the autonomy and self-sufficiency of the working class.

Once I learned #Luddite isn't actually a bad term, it upended my world.
* Few people are truly anti-progress
* Many in the middle are actually more "late stage capital hostile" than technology hostile
* Too many don't really understand the tech and so hate it for the wrong reasons
* Simplistic TechBro gung-ho-ism feels naive
It's not really as simple anymore...
