of all the other info I'm collecting, sweet little gems like this are what I'm really doing research at YIVO for 😅 a Romanian klezmer bandleader from NY who I'd never heard of?🤓 this was an advertisement in a 1935 Chotiner Hospital relief banquet commemorative journal. not surprisingly, after a bit of digging on FamilySearch Frankfort was from Chotin (Khotyn) himself (was in Bessarabia Gub. Russia when he emigrated, today in Ukraine).

interesting. a trailer for a new #podcast about the #klezmer music manuscripts in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, many of which were digitized by the Klezmer Institute volunteers (myself included) in the KMDMP project a few years ago.

Heading down to #Bellingham tomorrow to catch this #klezmer show performing some of the historic Ukrainian Jewish music I helped volunteer to digitise back in 2021. Looking forward to meeting Christina in person who I've collaborated with online over the years.
Preview of my upcoming Liedmatinee at Landesthater Detmold. I am so happy to present some of my favorite Jewish composers to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

was searching some names of old New York #klezmer musicians in Jpress and came across this literary evening at the Beethoven Hall in the LES in May 1935. Master #clarinet player Dave Tarras (rendered here phonetically as Deyv Teres) played masterful solos throughout the evening accompanied by Izzie Drutin, Alex Fidel, and other klez-notables from the era.

My other find in Bellingham yesterday, although it was a bit scratched so I asked for a discount. I almost skipped it (Tzena Tzena must be one of the worst Jewish songs of the twentieth century 😭) but I looked closed and realized despite the Israeli marketing it's almost all #klezmer and that I don't have any LPs by Ray Musiker (a decently known Klezmer #clarinet player of the postwar era).
Wow this is amazing. Definitely going to check it out, either digitally or when I'm in NY in February

Listening to this great interview with Berlin-based, Latvia-born Sasha Lurje, one of the hardest working #Yiddish singers out there, and a great friend who I got to know through Seattle Yiddish Fest. Lots of food for thought here 🍎😯

"For Aqua, her background in klezmer is both a problem and a generative source for her imaginative creativity. Klezmer, as a form of 'traditional music' is in a permanent state of partialness and is missing elements that Aqua seeks, and that she has taken active steps to find in related folk art forms."

If I had to think of #klezmer albums from this summer to recommend for #BandcampFriday it would probably be these two:
Ariane Morin, hardworking saxophonist from #Montreal just put out an album of her compositions, played by some of the top NY/Philly klezmers.

Alicia Svigals, NY violinist & former Klezmatics member, also put out a followup trad klezmer album to her 90s Fidl.

Sat around today with some old newspaper collections and finished writing this blog post about a particular composition by Jacob Gegna, whose Wikipedia bio I wrote last week. Mentions of this composition of his in promo materials from the 1910s/20s had intrigued me, but was too niche for Wikipedia.
yes I used the spelling Kiev, I figure Ukrainians will be OK with me putting that ugly history on the Russian Empire😅

Ariane Morin's new album of original #klezmer tunes is out today. A longtime presence in the #Montreal klez scene, she got a grant to record her new compositions in the US with some of the top musicians. IMO, the result is something like the modern Ukrainian-Moldova borderlands klezmer of Konsonans Retro or German Goldenshtayn. 😏🎶🎷

Was poking around on the Mayrent Collection for some #accordion inspiration since I've been playing around with one again. Lot of stuff I've never heard, but wow, this one from from A. Greenberg of New York in 1906 must be one of the oldest klezmer recordings ever made, although was cylinders were being made at the turn of the century so I can't say if it's the oldest. Cool stuff. "Occordion" heh.

among my batch of US Library of Congress #klezmer & #Romanian music scores I got last month, Max Leibowitz cribbing a bit from the old country yet again*😆I had already come across this Nunta ţărănească medley on the Romanian National Library digital collection while investigating Joseph Moskowitz's repertoire last year, because he recorded it on cimbalom too. At least Max didn't say "Composed by..." in this case...
