Super productive day today! Not only did I get to sow my courgettes, peppers and chives, but I went a bit mad and sowed a bunch of flowers as well :) Also built a greenhouse! So the setup has had a massive upgrade!

Early Fall is olive harvest time in northern Italy, and during a recent trip we were lucky enough to observe many olive trees heavy with ripening fruit. In the north, the only areas considered suitable to cultivation of olives are those around the largest alpine lakes. So it was no surprise that we were treated to the sight as we were traveling between Lakes Lugano and Ascona and finally to Lake Garda in late September. Fully 98% of the olive production in this area is represented by Taggiasca olives. These olives are deep purple in color with a buttery, fruity, delicate flavor and small notes of bitterness.

Sambucus canadensis (black elderberry), Ribes aureum (golden currant, not in native range), and rando native rose’s leaves budded out before the heavy snow. Checked on them today and they are fine.

We have a few native rose species locally. I collected berries of one that tasted really good, much better than any other rosehips I tried and doesn’t have prickly fibers. Guess we’ll find out id when it blooms.

I was so excited to see these large footprints in the snow, “what amazing creature is at home in my yard?” Then quickly realized it was a raccoon. 😏

Also picked a honker of a kumquat from my tree today.

This is the second navel orange I've had that had no sections like they usually do. Instead, this one is like a honeycomb and it has a star in the middle. Anyone else come across this?

White Italian grapes ripening on the vine watercolor art print. Early this Fall I visited the town of Lugano in Switzerland and stayed at the Hotel Lido Seegarten on the lake. Directly through the small lobby was a large arbor covering a seating area in front of the pool. Growing on this arbor were vines heavy with clusters of grapes. The effect of grapes growing directly overhead was nothing short of magical, and proves the point that not only are grapes wonderful for eating, juicing, and winemaking, but they are also a beautiful ornamental plant.

Do you know where nutmeg comes from? It comes from the tropical tree myristica fragrans, native to the malucca islands of Indonesia.
