So, last night I finally took the last step and switchted my DNS entries to my own self hosted mail server (@mwl your book was really helpful - great work!)

['I manage my own e-mail server. I occasionally have outbound messages rejected because my hosting provider's entire network sometimes appears on block/deny lists. I also have an e-mail account hosted by Microsoft Exchange Online. Yesterday, an outbound message from that account was rejected by a receiving server because the IPv4 address of one or more of Microsoft's servers was on a public block list.

Perhaps having multiple addresses hosted by different providers is now becoming a practical necessity.

I keep getting errors while trying to use my uni MS account with Thunderbird.

As a rule, I think #email is worth paying for, mostly for the tech support. With Fastmail, you also get a great, easy-to-use recovery facility for deleted emails.

I clicked the wrong button today. Meant to indicate that a SPAM email was not spam, but deleted it instead. Recovery was easy.

"...Musk appointees allegedly plugged their own email server into OPM network, breaking data security rules. ... The suit was filed after OPM sent two test emails to an estimated 2.3 million federal employees in a way that, the suit alleges, broke the E-Government Act of 2002 and was inherently insecure. I've come to the realization that if you run a compliant mail server (with DKIM, DMARC and SPF) then you become a target for brute-force password attacks because those Spammers do like their mail to be delivered reliably.

This seems to work in practice. I've noticed a lot of Spam, incoming, which passes all those checks and it only gets sent to my Junk folder due to the excellent efforts of Bogofilter.

If you run a mail server, make sure it'll stand up to these attacks.
