"The idea that there are only two genders is as fictional as a sorting hat."
Best subtle dig I've ever heard.
It comes from the conclusion to Philippa Gregory's latest book, "Normal Women", a historical review of what has been going on with women in England since 1066. Based on records. It's great, highly recommended - and, for those who like audio books, she reads it herself (with quotes etc read by others) and at times expresses her anger audibly. I found this highly cathartic.
I was particularly pleased to hear that she is good on gender and trans issues, with an exploration of how sex, gender and gender roles were perceived in England during each period she discusses (thus the quote above).
Anyway, it's amazing what can be done by a smart person looking at facts and records and again, I recommend the book.
(There are some parts that get a little repetitive because of the way she's structured it, but they are easy to skim/skip/tune out for.)
