"Racists will always call you a racist when you identify their racism. To love yourself now is a form of racism. We are the only people who are criticized for loving ourselves, and white people think when you love yourself you hate them. No, when I love myself they become irrelevant to me."― #DrJohnHenrikClarke #BlackHistory

"In order to understand white supremacy we must dismiss the fallacious notion that white people can give anybody their freedom. No man can give anybody his freedom. A man is born free. You may enslave a man after he is born free, and that is in fact what this country does." ― #StokelyCarmichael #BlackHistory
"The roots of sexism and homophobia are found in the same economic and political institutions that serve as the foundation of racism in this country and, more often than not, the same extremist circles that inflict violence on people of color are responsible for the eruptions of violence inspired by sexist and homophobic biases. Our political activism must clearly manifest our understanding of these connections." ― #AngelaDavis #BlackHistory

Today NASA is closing their Office of the Chief Scientist and Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy and also their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility branch.
It's a great time to remind your learning community of the incredible achievements of the Black women mathematicians in the 1960's space program that successfully put a man on the Moon. Yes, we're talking about Disney's Hidden Figures.
We offer a Hidden Figures discussion guide that's great for public screenings and low-key classroom use. We also offer classroom-ready lesson plans, across the curriculum, for grades 9-12.

"There was one of two things I had a right to: liberty or death. If I could not have one, I would have the other, for no man should take me alive. I should fight for my liberty as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me."

Obi-Wan Kenobi S01E03 released in 2022
The Path is their version of the Underground Railroad.
Surely its brief inclusion in this episode supports the idea believed by many white racists that the underground railroad and the transatlantic slave trade etc were fantasies.

I saw an intriguing interview with Elaine Weiss, author of the new book "Spell Freedom -- The Underground Schools that Built the Civil Rights Movement". Highly recommend watching:
https://youtu.be/o85dvpYmyBE
(Also "interesting" is that her book event scheduled to take place at the Jimmy Carter Library was suddenly cancelled by the newly installed leadership of the National Archives after the previous Archivist of the US and much of the leadership of the National Archives were fired by our new overlords.)
IMO one reason our democracy has fallen to where it is today is that students are no longer being educated on how government works or their rights and responsibilities as citizens, making them more vulnerable to political propaganda and apathy. So I think there are important lessons we all can learn from this history that could be applied to dealing with what we are facing today.

Boo hiss! #DC's #BlackLivesMatter mural will be erased. Look back at the iconic street painting
March 8, 2025
"#WashingtonDC's iconic 'Black Lives Matter' street mural, which has served as a powerful symbol of #activism and a gathering place for #joy and #resistance, will soon be gone.
"The decision to remove the enormous mural near the #WhiteHouse comes after a U.S. Rep. #AndrewClyde, R-#Georgia, introduced legislation earlier this week that gave D.C. an ultimatum: either paint over the slogan or risk losing federal funding. The bill also called for the area in downtown D.C. to be re-named from #BlackLivesMatterPlaza to Liberty Plaza."

Roy Ayers, the legendary jazz vibraphonist and composer, sampled by countless artists, dies at 84.
Ayers began his career as a post-bop jazz artist, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk.
His soul lingers in the vibrato always.

"A group of University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) students have painstakingly preserved a photographer’s archive by digitizing it and making it available online to anyone. Six students worked on the project over the course of two to preserve the work of Clinton Wright, a press photographer who documented Black life in the Westside neighborhood of Las Vegas in the 1960s."

"Isaac Julien’s monumental and immersive five-channel video installation Lessons of the Hour is an evocative portrait of abolitionist, orator and aesthetic philosopher Frederick Douglass. A spoken monologue carries across the 28-minute narrative, with passages primarily excerpted by Julien from three of Douglass’ most famous speeches."

Missouri GOP’s Effort to Take Over St. Louis Police Hearkens Back to Civil War
—
City officials say the state’s plan to wrest back control of the police department is an attempt by white conservatives to weaken Black political influence. It’s part of a broader pattern of Missouri Republicans trying to override the will of voters.

“Either America will destroy ignorance or ignorance will destroy the United States.”
Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois, born on this day in 1868
Black people have been trying to help save America for nearly 200 yrs. The abolitionist Frederick Douglass was the first American who sought to explore the fragility of American democracy. Don't try to disagree.

For Black History Month, NBC has created this @Flipboard Storyboard focusing on joy. In it, you'll find stories about Black folks embracing line dancing, skydiving and globetrotting, as well as the world's only go-go museum, and the Black Men Smile organization. "We are looking at the ways that Black people celebrate, laugh, share and encourage each other through positivity and community," explain the curators.
