Clocks to 'fall back' for time change in Alberta this Sunday. How will this affect us?

As fall secures its grip on Calgary, there’s that first Sunday every November where Albertans get an extra hour of shut-eye. Aptly referred to as the “fall back” for clocks across the province, it’s when we return to Mountain Standard Time (MST) from Mountain Daylight Time (MDT). Also called daylight saving time, MDT begins on the second Sunday of March each year — that’s the “spring forward.” Regarding the switch in the fall, this year the change to MST lands on Sunday, Nov. 3, when clocks will go back one hour at 2 a.m.

Although many people talk about spring as a time when we “lose an hour” and fall as “gaining an hour,” it’s actually different than that, according to Dr. Mike Antle, a psychology professor at the University of Calgary. Antle said that the spring forward takes advantage of a “surplus” of daylight in the summertime, getting more light in the evening…
