Yesterday, on the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, I had the privilege of attending a ceremony at the Canadian Museum of History to unveil the new residential schools monument, created by Kwagu’l master carver Stanley C. Hunt. Taking its inspiration from the traditional west coast totem pole, it is both ominous and inspiring. #OrangeShirtDay #TruthAndReconciliation

A tall black and orange pillar topped with a carving of an enormous black bird sits in the sun-filled Four Seasons Room at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau. On the right hand side, tall interior window look down on the brooding monument. Behind the huge statue, on a white wall, we can catch a glimpse of colourful abstract paintings in the signature style of Alberta Indigenous artist Alex Janvier.
