@Badgardener Superb! I like this a lot. And rural heating is what it is, we got rid of LPG in favour of wood pellets (following the advice of the time) but not wood pellets are frowned upon and we absolutely cannot afford to change the system again.
Through work, I get a lot of firewood - the crates which Brazilian slate slabs (most common patio surface for us) come in are made of hardwood and are BRILLIANT for burning. So we rely mostly on that for heating, and the oil does the hot water.
Last year, we looked at air source heat pumps and even with the massive government subsidy, it was still another £9k. There is an obvious scam going on, there. No mains gas here anyway, and we may not have long left in this house in any case.

Fortunately my neighbours, who I regularly donate wood to, are also of the 'if it burns' persuasion, so our consciences are rarely troubled.
