A wooden worm box buried in my plot since February has provided a steady supply of vermicast over the growing year.

The worms are free to come and go as they please. Enough seem to stay and feed on the veg and plant scraps that are added regularly.

Photo from February of a wood framed box with wire mesh sides dug into the ground. Split into two halves, one half is filled to the top with organic matter and topped with leaf litter. The other side is empty with only a leaf covering over the soil. As the worms eat their way through the material, more will be added. Before the worm compost is needed on the beds organic matter will be added to the other, empty, side of the box and the worms will migrate to that side, leaving their vermicast for harvesting.
