When German shells were falling on the 56th Evacuation Hospital at Anzio, Feb. 10, 1944, Army nurse 2nd Lt. Ellen G. Ainsworth helped move wounded soldiers to safety. On Feb. 12, 1944, the German military attacked again during which a piece of shrapnel pierced Ainsworth’s chest. Four days later, she died of her wounds. Ainsworth posthumously received the Silver Star for her actions. She is buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Italy. - American Battle Monuments Commission #WomensHistoryMonth
