While the text suggests that this landscape was formed by water flowing down the slope, that is most probably not the case here. It's been millions of years since the last time water flowed on the surface of Mars, and the ground surface we see today is the result of aeolic rather than of water erosion.

Human minds instinctively interpret an image using familiar concepts created by observing the physical world and there is nothing more familiar than ground scarred by little creeks made by water converging downhill after a rain.
